Did You Know?
While the first potatoes were planted in Maine in 1719, potato cultivation in Maine began in June 1807 when Joseph Houlton planted the first crop in Aroostook County, specifically in the area now known as Houlton. Initially grown for local consumption, potatoes became a significant commercial crop with the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s, which facilitated access to broader markets.
By the early 20th century, the industry was a key part of the state’s economy, driven by family farms supplying national markets. By the 1940s, Maine had become the leading potato producer in the United States, with Aroostook County at the heart of this boom due to its ideal climate and soil. Today, the Maine Potato Board reports Maine’s potato industry remains resilient, contributing $1.3 billion to the state’s economy, supporting over 6,500 jobs, and continuing to thrive in Aroostook County, which accounts for 91% of the state’s potato farmland.
Over time, Maine potato growers have adapted to challenges through innovation, cooperative efforts, and sustainable farming practices. Today, while fewer farms remain, Maine continues to produce high-quality seed, table-stock, and specialty potatoes, maintaining its reputation for excellence in the industry.
